Sean Fletcher Discusses Renewable Energy Transition on ABC Radio

The Shire of Victoria Plains is helping shape how regional communities participate in Western Australia's renewable energy transition, with CEO Sean Fletcher recently appearing on ABC Radio Perth's morning program with Nadia Mitsopoulos to discuss the opportunities and challenges facing local governments as major renewable energy projects move forward.

During the interview, Sean highlighted the important role local governments can play in ensuring the benefits of renewable energy projects are shared with the communities that host them. While acknowledging growing national discussions around legislated renewable energy royalties and benefit-sharing models, he pointed to Western Australia's Community Benefit Plan pilot as a practical approach that is already gaining momentum.

The Shire of Victoria Plains is one of four local governments participating in the pilot alongside Dandaragan, Narrogin and West Arthur. Working with Powering WA, the project is focused on developing community-led benefit plans and governance arrangements that will help determine how funding generated through renewable energy developments is reinvested into local communities.

A key theme of Sean's interview was the importance of local knowledge and community input. He explained that communities themselves should play a central role in identifying priorities and shaping how benefits are delivered, particularly given that many renewable energy projects will operate for decades and become a long-term part of the local landscape.

Sean also reinforced the value of local governments being directly involved in the process. As the level of government closest to their communities, councils have a detailed understanding of local challenges, opportunities and future priorities. This on-the-ground knowledge helps ensure funding can be directed towards initiatives that deliver genuine and lasting community outcomes rather than adopting a one-size-fits-all national approach.
